Why Algorithms Need Market Hours Data
Algorithmic trading systems need precise knowledge of market hours for one simple reason: you can't send an order to a closed exchange. But the relationship goes much deeper. Every aspect of an algo's behavior, from scanning for opportunities to flattening positions, is governed by the trading schedule.
Session-Aware Execution
A well-designed algorithm knows the pre-market starts at 4:00 AM, regular session runs until 4:00 PM, and after-hours extends to 8:00 PM. It adjusts behavior for each session. During pre-market, it might use wider price bands. During the opening auction, it might pause to avoid initial volatility. During midday, it might switch from aggressive to passive execution.
For multi-market algorithms trading across global exchanges, session awareness becomes exponentially complex. An algorithm trading US, European, and Asian equities simultaneously needs to track 16+ different schedules including lunch breaks and holiday calendars. A bug in holiday handling can cause orders to be sent to a closed exchange.
Volume Profiles and Optimal Execution
Institutional algorithms like VWAP and TWAP depend on historical volume profiles tied to market hours. A VWAP algo front-loads volume in the first hour when participation is highest, reduces execution during midday, and ramps up in the closing hour. These curves must account for lunch breaks in Asian markets.
Risk Management and Market Close
Most algorithmic systems have hard rules about positions relative to market close. Day trading algos must flatten before the closing bell. Swing trading algos reduce sizes heading into weekends or holidays. Overnight gap risk increases significantly when positions are held through long closures.
Daylight Saving Time: The Algorithm Breaker
DST transitions are notorious for causing bugs. When the US springs forward, the New York-Tokyo offset changes from 14 to 13 hours. If an algorithm hardcodes offsets instead of using timezone libraries, it miscalculates opens and closes for two weeks each year. Production systems treat DST as a critical infrastructure concern.
